OekoTex Standard 100 is an independent certification that tests textile products against over 1,000 harmful substances and confirms they are safe for human contact. It covers every component of the finished item — fabric, threads, dyes, finishes, and accessories — not just the raw fibre. A product carrying the label has been tested by an independent OekoTex partner institute and verified free from substances including banned azo dyes, heavy metals, pesticide residues, formaldehyde, and PFAS compounds. Certification is renewed annually.

What Actually Gets Tested
The 1,000+ substances covered by OekoTex Standard 100 include categories that matter specifically for institutional textile procurement:
Banned azo dyes — certain azo dyes can break down into carcinogenic compounds on contact with skin. OekoTex tests for 22 specific azo dyes banned under EU and UK regulations.
Heavy metals — lead, cadmium, chromium VI, and others can be introduced during dyeing and finishing processes. OekoTex sets limits stricter than current UK/EU legal requirements in several categories.
Pesticide residues — raw cotton is typically treated during farming. OekoTex tests the finished textile for residual pesticide compounds that survive the manufacturing process.
Formaldehyde — used in fabric finishing processes to reduce creasing. Can cause skin irritation and respiratory sensitivity. OekoTex limits are well below the levels that cause reactions in sensitive individuals.
pH value — fabric pH outside 4.0–7.5 (the natural range of healthy skin) can cause irritation, particularly in prolonged skin contact. OekoTex tests and limits pH for all product classes.
PFAS compounds — per-fluorinated substances used in water and stain-resistant finishes. Increasingly restricted due to persistence in the environment and links to health effects.
The practical point: OekoTex Standard 100 tests for more substances than are currently prohibited by UK or EU law. A certified product is not just legally compliant — it goes beyond the legal baseline.
The Four Product Classes
OekoTex classifies textiles into four groups based on skin contact intensity, with Class 1 carrying the strictest limits:
Class 1 — products for babies and children under 36 months. The most stringent class. Applies to cot bedding, infant clothing, and similar items.
Class 2 — textiles in direct, prolonged skin contact. This is where most AHT bedding and towels are certified — duvet covers, sheets, pillowcases, and towels that are in contact with skin for hours at a time. The limits in Class 2 are stricter than in Classes 3 and 4.
Class 3 — textiles without direct or prolonged skin contact. Outer garments, curtains, upholstery fabric.
Class 4 — home textiles with no regular skin contact. Decorative items, furniture filling.
For care homes and hospitals purchasing certified bedding, Class 2 certification is the relevant benchmark to look for — and to document in procurement records.
What OekoTex Does NOT Certify
This section prevents the most common misunderstanding in institutional procurement.
OekoTex Standard 100 is not an organic farming certification — that is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which covers the entire supply chain from farm to factory and requires organic fibre sourcing.
It is not a supply chain ethics certification — that is Sedex, which covers labour conditions and responsible sourcing through independent audit.
It is not a fire safety certification — that is BS 7175, which governs flame retardancy testing for bedding and textiles in institutional settings.
It is not a sustainability certification covering carbon footprint, packaging, or environmental impact beyond chemical inputs.
These are four different standards, each covering a different part of the supply chain. Why It Matters by Setting
Care homes: Elderly residents typically have thinner skin with reduced barrier function, meaning chemical compounds can be absorbed more readily through prolonged contact with bedding. OekoTex Class 2 certified bedding is the appropriate standard for care home procurement and is increasingly referenced in quality frameworks and CQC documentation.
NHS and hospital procurement: NHS supply chain frameworks increasingly include chemical safety requirements for patient-contact textiles. OekoTex Standard 100 is widely accepted as a baseline RSL (Restricted Substance List) reference in healthcare procurement.
Hotels: OekoTex certification supports allergy communication to guests. A hotel can legitimately state that its bedding has been independently tested and confirmed free from harmful substances — a meaningful claim in an era where guests with chemical sensitivities increasingly read product labels.
Schools and nurseries: Products for children under 36 months require Class 1 certification — stricter limits than Class 2. For primary school age and above, Class 2 is appropriate.
