Bamboo viscose is the most widely produced form. Raw bamboo pulp is dissolved using chemicals (typically sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide) and extruded as fibre. This process largely destroys the natural bamboo cell structure — which means the antimicrobial properties associated with raw bamboo (attributed to a bio-agent called "bamboo kun" in the original plant) do not reliably survive the manufacturing process. The resulting fibre is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, but the antibacterial claim is not well-supported for the finished textile. This isn't unique to low-quality manufacturers — it applies across most bamboo viscose bedding regardless of price point.

Bamboo lyocell is manufactured through a closed-loop process where solvents are recovered and reused, retaining more of the original bamboo fibre structure. It is genuinely more sustainable in production and closer to the natural bamboo properties. Less commonly stocked, and more expensive.

Temperature regulation — Bamboo genuinely outperforms hollowfibre here. Bamboo fibre is more moisture-wicking and breathable than polyester. For warm sleepers or rooms that retain heat, this is a real difference guests notice. Skin feel — Bamboo is consistently softer against skin than standard hollowfibre. The outer material in our bamboo duvet is smoother and drapes differently to a polycotton hollowfibre cover. Wash care — Bamboo requires cold water or a gentle cycle at low temperature and must be tumble dried on low heat. Avoid high temperatures and fabric softeners, which degrade the bamboo fibre. For high-turnover commercial settings that need to launder at 60°C for hygiene compliance, bamboo is a constraint. Hollowfibre handles 40–60°C reliably.

Is bamboo bedding actually antibacterial?

Bamboo duvets are not suitable for hot wash cycles at 60°C, which makes them less practical for commercial settings requiring high-temperature hygiene laundering.

Are bamboo duvets suitable for allergy sufferers?

 Bamboo is a good choice for buyers with general chemical or synthetic sensitivities, as the natural fibre is less likely to cause contact reactions. It is not a clinical hypoallergenic certification. Dust mite populations — the most common cause of bedding-related allergies — are not eliminated by bamboo fibre. Regular washing is what reduces dust mite counts, regardless of fill type.
