Fire Retardant Bedding for Nursing Homes

Fire Retardant Bedding for Nursing Homes and Care Homes — What You Need to Know

Fire retardant bedding is a legal requirement in nursing homes and care homes across the UK. Bedding — including duvets, pillows, sheets, pillowcases, and blankets — must comply with BS 7175, the British Standard governing flame retardancy in institutional bedding. If your current stock isn't certified, or if you're unsure whether it meets the level required by your fire risk assessment, that's a compliance gap you need to close before your next inspection, not after it.

At Absolute Home Textiles, we've been supplying BS 7175 certified FR bedding to nursing homes, care homes, and care facilities across the UK for over 27 years. We stock both Source 5 and Source 7 certified products, can provide certification documentation on request, and our team is available to discuss your specific requirements: 01204 653023, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm.

Why Nursing Homes and Care Homes Need FR Bedding

Care environments present a higher fire risk than standard domestic settings — not because of negligence, but because of the nature of the population they support. Residents may have limited mobility, reduced reaction times, or cognitive conditions that affect their ability to respond to a fire quickly. The consequences of a fire spreading through non-compliant bedding in that environment are severe, which is why the legal requirement exists.

BS 7175 certified bedding is specifically designed to resist ignition, slow the spread of flame, and self-extinguish rather than continue burning once an ignition source is removed. It does not make bedding fireproof — but it buys critical time for staff to respond and residents to be evacuated safely.

Beyond the direct safety case, non-compliant bedding creates real operational risk: enforcement action from the local fire authority, insurance issues if a fire occurs, and CQC inspection findings that can affect registration. Compliance is not optional in this sector.

BS 7175 Source 5 and Source 7 — Which Does Your Setting Need?

We stock BS 7175 certified FR bedding at two compliance levels: Source 5 and Source 7. Both are genuine, currently manufactured product lines with full certification documentation available.

Source 5 is tested against ignition sources simulating common accidental fire risks. Source 7 represents a higher level of ignition resistance — it is tested against more severe ignition scenarios and is considered suitable for settings where the risk of deliberate or more intense ignition must be accounted for.

Which level your nursing home or care home requires depends on your specific fire risk assessment and the guidance of your local fire authority. We don't prescribe that requirement — it's a compliance decision that sits with your fire risk assessor, not a textile supplier. What we can do is supply certified product at either level, provide the documentation you need for your assessment, and tell you what we've supplied to comparable settings. Call 01204 653023 or email info@abtex.co.uk to discuss.

What FR Bedding Do You Need to Cover?

A common gap in care home compliance is treating "FR bedding" as meaning the duvet and nothing else. BS 7175 applies to all finished bedding items, and a comprehensive FR bedding setup for a care home room covers:

Duvets — available from us in Source 5 and Source 7 certified versions, 10.5 and 13.5 tog, 100% Hollowfibre Polyester filling, machine washable.

Pillows — Source 5 and Source 7 certified, 100% Hollowfibre Polyester filling, 650 GSM, anti-allergenic.

Fitted and flat sheets — BS 7175 Crib 7 certified FR sheets in standard bed sizes.

Pillowcases — FR envelope style, BS 7175 Crib 7 certified.

Blankets — FR cellular and thermal blankets, BS 7175 certified, 178x228cm.

Waterproof and FR combined products — for settings where fluid resistance is also required alongside fire compliance. We stock waterproof and FR duvets (PU and Green Tint variants), waterproof and FR pillows, waterproof FR mattress protectors, and waterproof FR duvet and pillow protectors. These are particularly relevant for care environments managing incontinence or infection control requirements alongside fire safety.

All products are available at tiered bulk pricing — the more you order, the lower the per-unit cost. iwocaPay is available for B2B buyers managing cash flow on larger orders.

Maintaining Compliance — Laundering FR Bedding Correctly

Buying certified FR bedding is the first step. Keeping it compliant through repeated commercial laundering is the second, and it's where a lot of care homes quietly lose their certification status without realising it.

Our FR bedding uses Proban-treated fabric — a chemical treatment that bonds a flame-retardant compound into the fibre structure. That treatment has a defined wash life, and it degrades faster if laundering falls outside the manufacturer's specification: too hot, wrong detergent, or over-drying will shorten the effective life of the FR certification.

The rules for maintaining compliance are straightforward: wash at the label temperature, use a mild detergent, skip the fabric softener and bleach, and tumble dry on low heat. For care homes running in-house laundry, it's worth briefing laundry staff specifically on FR items rather than processing them the same as standard bedding stock.

If you're reviewing your current FR stock ahead of an inspection and want to confirm what replacement threshold to apply, our team can advise.

FAQs

Is fire retardant bedding a legal requirement in care homes?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. UK care homes are required to use BS 7175 compliant bedding as part of their fire safety obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and relevant care sector guidance. The specific certification level required depends on your fire risk assessment. Your local fire authority or fire risk assessor is the correct body to confirm what's required for your specific setting — not your bedding supplier.

What is the difference between Source 5 and Source 7 FR bedding?

Both are compliance levels within the BS 7175 framework. Source 7 represents a higher level of ignition resistance than Source 5 — it's tested against a more severe ignition scenario. We stock both. Which one is required for your care home depends on your fire risk assessment. Contact our team and we can provide certification documentation for either level.

Does FR bedding feel different to standard bedding?

Modern Proban-treated FR bedding is designed to feel soft and comfortable in normal use. Our FR duvets and pillows use 100% Hollowfibre Polyester filling — the same as standard institutional bedding. The FR treatment is in the outer fabric, not the filling, and does not significantly affect the handle or feel in day-to-day use.

How often does FR bedding need to be replaced in a care home setting?

Treated FR fabric has a defined wash life — it remains compliant for a specified number of washes provided it's laundered within the manufacturer's guidelines. Replacement frequency depends on how often the bedding is washed and whether laundering has been carried out to spec. If you're managing compliance across a large facility and need guidance on replacement schedules, our team can advise based on the products you're using.

Can you provide certification documentation for your FR bedding?

Yes. Certification documentation is available on request for all BS 7175 certified products in our range. Contact us before ordering if you need this for a fire risk assessment or CQC inspection: 01204 653023 or info@abtex.co.uk.

Do you supply FR bedding in bulk for care homes?

Yes — we specialise in bulk and institutional supply. Tiered pricing applies across the FR range, and we can provide custom quotes for larger orders. iwocaPay B2B deferred payment is available for qualifying orders.
