What Is GSM in Towels? Quick Definition

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much a square metre of towelling fabric weighs — and by extension, how dense the weave is. A 600 GSM towel has more cotton fibre packed into every square metre than a 400 GSM towel. That's the whole definition. It's a density measurement, not a quality score — and it's not the same as thread count (which measures how tightly threads are woven per square inch of fabric, and applies to bedding, not towels).

The single most important thing to understand about GSM is that higher doesn't automatically mean better. Higher GSM means heavier, thicker, and slower to dry. Lower GSM means lighter, faster drying, and lower laundry energy cost per cycle. Whether that trade-off works in your favour depends entirely on what the towel is for.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

A quick reference for how each GSM tier is used in practice:

400 GSM — commercial and fast-drying. The weight most gyms, leisure centres, and high-turnover institutional settings use because it handles daily washing and dries between cycles without backing up a laundry queue.
